Situated
on the banks of the Seine between Giverny and Vétheuil, La
Roche Guyon castle is surprising architectural synthesis of over
ten centuries, nestled in a subtly lit imposing setting so appreciated
by impressionists.
The 12th century keep dominates the Seine Valley like a sleeping
sentinel at the border between the Ile de France and Normandy. It
is connected to the fortress below by an impressive secret passage
over one hundred metres long.
In the 18th century, Duke de La Rochefoucauld and his daughter carried
out large scale work. The monumental entrance, grand stables, pavilions
and terraces blend into the medieval fortress. in 1944, Rommel and
his headquarters occupied the castle. Underground blockhouses were
secretly installed in the cliff.
